The Self-Employment (SE) Program provides training on how to start
and run a small business. The program is for unemployed individuals
who have identified a viable business opportunity that matches their
skill and financial situation.
Qualified participants may be eligible to receive EI payments or
financial support for part or all of the six-month training and
start-up period. The length and amount of payments depends on your
own personal situation or Employment Insurance Benefit claim.
Who Can Apply?
Those eligible to apply include individuals who are:
- 18 years of age or older
- Currently on EI
- Have had an active EI claim in the past 3 years (5 years
for maternity/paternity claims)
- Social Assistance recipient
- Not currently employed

Applicants must:
- Attend an information session
- Complete a self assessment demonstrating a viable business
concept
- Demonstrate personal commitment to the business
- Agree to work full-time on the business during the training
- Not leave a job to participate in the program
Business Concept
- A new business or purchase of an existing business are
eligible
- The business cannot be started or purchased prior to applying
to the SE program
- Must be suitable for public funding
- The business must be based within CFH's region.
- Complete a business opportunity assessment including preliminary
market research
